Why Visit Huangshan?
Huangshan (literally "Yellow Mountain") is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a true icon of Chinese natural beauty. It is famous for its "Four Wonders": ancient pine trees, uniquely shaped rocks, the ethereal sea of clouds, and relaxing hot springs. Nearby, the 900-year-old visit to Hongcun offers a glimpse into a world of white-walled houses and tranquil canals that served as the backdrop for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Getting There: Shanghai to Huangshan and Beyond
Getting to the mountains is easier than ever thanks to China’s high-speed rail network.
Shanghai to Huangshan: The most popular route. Trains depart frequently from Shanghai Hongqiao and take just 2.5 to 3 hours.
Beijing to Huangshan: A comfortable 5.5 to 6-hour journey on the high-speed train.
The Logistics Hack: When you arrive at Huangshan North Station, you are still about 50km from the mountain gates. While local buses exist, they can be a maze of schedules and queues. Many of our guests choose a Huangshan private tour because it includes a driver waiting at the station to whisk you straight to your hotel, saving you hours of transit time.
Best Time to Visit the Yellow Mountain China
You can visit any day of the year, as each season offers a different "vibe"
Spring - Azaleas and Mist: The best time for the "Sea of Clouds“. Temperatures warm in the day and cool at night
Summer - Cool Mountain Air: A perfect escape from the city heat (but hot and humid at the foot of the mountain)
Autumn - Clear Skies & Red Leaves: The most reliable weather for sunrises with good temperatures for hiking
Winter - Winter Wonderland: A quiet, frozen fairyland with cold weather but fewer crowds and cheaper hotels
As always, we recommend avoiding these popular domestic tourist destinations during Chinese public holidays due to crowding

Your 3-Day Huangshan Itinerary
This is our tried-and-tested route to ensure you see the highlights without feeling rushed.
Day 1: Ancient History at Hongcun
Your adventure begins the moment you step off the train. After meeting your private guide at the station, you’ll head straight to visit Hongcun.
The Problem: Navigating the intricate, ox-shaped canal system of Hongcun can be confusing for first-timers. The Solution: Your guide will walk you through the secret alleyways, explaining the history of the Hui-style architecture before taking you to stay near the foot of the mountain for a restful night.
Day 2: Scaling the Peaks
Today, you head up! A scenic cable car ride takes you to the summit of the Yellow Mountain China. You’ll explore iconic spots like Beginning-to-Believe Peak and the Flying Stone with an English-speaking local guide so you won’t have to stress about directions.
The Problem: Most visitors try to do the mountain in one day, meaning they miss the spectacular sunset. The Solution: We arrange for you to stay overnight at a hotel right on the summit. As the day-trippers head down, you’ll enjoy a peaceful mountain evening and panoramic views from Bright Summit.
Day 3: A Sunrise to Remember
Waking up above the clouds is an experience you’ll never forget. You are just a short walk from the best sunrise viewpoints. After breakfast, visit the Cloud-dispersing Pavilion to see the "absurd stones" and deep valleys before the last leg of the hike and taking the cable car back down. Your driver will be waiting at the base to ensure you get back to the train station.
